    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. This was my first "real saw". Starts 2nd pull everytime, and cuts like a beast.Seems the chain dulled fast, but that may have been me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So much for the 1st chain. The Farm Boss chain saw was purchased to upgrade a smaller Stihl saw that would not work. The new saw is working great especially with the motomix fuel. The first chain lasted only 2 hours. Was cutting thick Mesquite tree stumps and the 1st chain must have gotten hot. A few of the links expanded and would no longer slide through the guide groove. There was still chain oil in the reservoir, but I guess it can happen. Have purchased another chain but it has gotten dull after a couple of hours of hard work. Third new chain is standing by. Will be needing a sharpener next, still have more stumps to cut. So far it has been a good investment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First Time Buyer Happy After the Sale First time chainsaw purchase and user.Trying to decide what saw to purchase was the hardest part.I have a camper and am looking at clearing trees and cutting maybe 3-4 cords of firewood a year.Started out looking at the MS 251 wood boss.I really wanted a 20" bar (or so I thought)Went into Central Equipment (our area Elite Sthil dealer). After talking with the salesman I decided on an MS271 with a 20" bar.I return a couple days later and another salesmen said that the MS271 was under powered for a 20" and I needed to get an MS 311. He didn't bother to ask what or how much I was cutting.I left that store never to return.Ended up buying from my NAPA store in town. You pay a premium price for Sthil but the sales experience sucks.I bought an MS271 and so far I like it.It not to heavy and plenty of power for cutting hardwood. It goes through a fare amount of bar oil. 1 at in 3 qts of Moto Mix.As far as quality and dependablity I will have to get back on that one.But so far I think I made the right choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two Year Review After two years of frequent use for my MS271, I thought that an after the new wears off review would be good. I have had a few other chain saws over the years, but this was my first Stihl. It did not start out so well. I picked up the saw on 7/28 and it was back at the hardware store a day later as I could not start it. They could not either and after a new carb was installed I got it back on 8/1. It started fine now, but on 8/7 it was back in the shop with one of the bar studs pulled out. Stihl swapped the power head under warranty and I was back in business by 8/18.Since then it’s been dead reliable with no problems at all. And what a saw! With an 18” blade and the yellow RS chain my salesperson hooked me up with, it tears through logs like crazy. It has all the power I could ever need. The power, the anti-vibration system and the light weight make it the least fatiguing saw I have ever used, even after a long day cutting trees down and up. Starting is a snap. After a couple of pulls on full choke when cold, it pops right off on half choke and warms up without stalling. When warm it will start on the first pull with no choke and in between on half choke. After two saws that did not like to start, the 271 is worth the tab on starting alone. I was skeptical of the no-adjustment chain oiler, but after a lot of use it seems to be fine, using about as much bar oil as my other saws have. And I like the chain and fuel fill caps, which are typical of the quality built in. I do keep a close eye on chain tension, typically adjusting it a time or two during a full day of cutting, but that’s what I am used to anyway. The sprocket box gets cleaned out regularly, as does the rest of the saw and I use the Stihl 2-cycle oil exclusively, always with 91 octane no-ethanol fuel.I really have no complaints at all (although had I known that the MS291 was the same weight I might have sprung for that), it’s been that good for me. I will be adding a Stihl weed trimmer soon, after having also purchased the MM55 mini-cultivator – it’s a slick unit too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Recently purchased an MS271. I was skeptical on the new machine because I had always used older Stihl products like the 036. I love my MS271. Has plenty of power. Brought down and chopped up two large hard wood trees that a storm knocked across the creek. Saw has enough weight to be sturdy but not too heavy that it is hard to use for a long period of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw, very powerful - but two suggestions... Although I've only used it a few times so far, I really like my new new Farm Boss saw. The only two negative comments I would have are:1. It took me searching You Tube to figure out how to start it. To me (and my wife) the manual was not clear at all. I'd recommend that Stihl revisit this important part of the manual.2. It's a little hard to start; i.e. the cord is hard to pull. Especially, for a first time user. Not too bad once you know what to expect though. Also, it's impossible for an older guy to assume the recommended position for starting. My body won't bend in that shape, ha... I have to start it on the ground with my knee holding it steady.Other than that, this saw is GREAT. Took down some trees and cut them up quickly and cleanly as expected.Great saw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another excellant Stihl product. I've used several different saws in the past for the usual homeowner needs, but about two years ago I purchased 26 acres of rural property and decided I would get serious about a chainsaw. I bought the MS271 Farm Boss and never looked back. This saw is by far the best, and fastest cutting saw I ever used. I love this chainsaw. Been using it for a year or so now, and it still starts easy, and still surprises me on how much faster I can get things done. I like it so much I just bought a Stihl pole pruner. The review on that is forthcoming as I haven't had any time with it yet. Feels good tho. Thanks Stihl!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Very hard to start This saw is so hard to start. It turns over so hard. If I pull it as hard as I can Most of the time it will start. If not it acts like it is flooded. When I do get it started and cut wood Then shut it off to move brush Then Try to restart it. I am out of luck. The last thing I want to do is have chain saw trouble out in the woods.
